How Russian word stress works

Russian stress is not fixed. The stressed syllable can appear in different parts of a word and may move when the word changes form. Stress marks are normally omitted in everyday Russian and are useful when you are learning a new word, reading aloud or checking pronunciation.

The letter Ё carries stress. Russian texts often print Е where Ё is expected.

Some words have the same spelling and different meanings depending on stress.
